THESA SCHOLARSHIPS

All scholarships are submitted through our Google forms linked in the images below. Please select the scholarship application(s) that you are eligible for and e-mail thesa@thesa.org if you have any questions or if the google forms are not working for you.

THESA offers four scholarships for Home Economics educators and students to further their educational goals. The scholarships currently award $750 each. All scholarship applications and supporting information must be submitted no later than April 15 of each calendar year. The Wineva Jones Memorial Scholarship is $750 awarded at the discretion of the committee to a home economics student in their final year of teacher education who has demonstrated passion, dedication and a heartfelt belief in the value of Home Economics education. 

  • Preference will be given to candidates who show promise in inspiring others and fostering greater understanding of the value of Home Economics within the profession and the public.

  • The Dr. Mary Leah De Zwart and Dr. Mary Gale Smith Graduate Scholarship is $750 awarded at the discretion of the committee to a student pursuing a post-graduate diploma, master or a doctorate degree who would benefit Home Economics education in B.C.

    Preference will be given to candidates who show promise that their participation in Home Economics education will be a meaningful contribution toward scholarly achievement and professional development that benefits Home Economics classrooms in British Columbia.

  • The Dr. Linda Peterat Scholarship is $750 awarded at the discretion of the committee to a Teacher Education student, Graduate student, or Home Economics Education Diploma student.

    Preference will be given to candidates who show promise that their participation in Home Economics education will be a meaningful contribution toward teaching and/or learning in Home Economics classrooms in British Columbia.

  • The Denise Nembhard Scholarship is $750 awarded at the discretion of the committee to a Teacher Education student, Graduate student, or Home Economics Education Diploma student.

    Preference will be given to candidates who show promise that their participation in Home Economics education will contribute to antiracism, decolonization, and indigenization of Home Economics classrooms in British Columbia.

GENERAL APPLICANT Criteria

  • Applicants must be active BCTF and THESA members
    (Please note, B.Ed. Home Economics students are not required to be active BCTF members)

  • Applicants must apply by the deadline

  • Applicants must supply complete online applications including supporting documentation (i.e. grades, personal and professional references and involvement in committees) by the deadline.

  • THESA is committed to furthering social justice, diversity, decolonization, equity, and inclusion within our community. Applicants are encouraged to disclose, on a voluntary basis, whether they self-identify as a member of an equity-deserving group, which includes female, 2SLGBTQIA+ person, a person of colour, a person who has experienced racism, Aboriginal (Indigenous) person, and/or a person with a disability.

Selection Process

  1. The scholarship chair is an elected member of the THESA executive.

  2. The scholarship chair will strike a committee to review applications.

  3. Members of the committee cannot be scholarship applicants.

  4. The successful applicant will be notified of the committee’s decision by the scholarship chair.

  5. The successful applicants will be recognized in the newsletter and on social media channels.
